Abstract English

Jeddah, located on the Red Sea coast, holds strategic and religious significance as the gateway to Mecca and a central hub between Asia and Africa. Its port served as a vital point for pilgrims and trade, yet its social and economic history has been largely overlooked by early Muslim historians, often only appearing in sources related to Mecca. This research aims to shed light on Jeddah’s historical role from the advent of Islam to the end of the Abbasid era. It focuses on two key cultural dimensions: social and economic conditions. The study examines the city’s population makeup, living standards, and urban features, as well as the main economic activities such as trade, industry, and fishing. Drawing from historical texts, geographical accounts, and travelers’ writings, the research provides a comprehensive analysis of Jeddah’s overlooked yet significant role in Islamic history during this formative period

الملخص العربي

تمتاز مدينة جدة بموقع جغرافي هام على البُعدين الإستراتيجي والديني، فهي تقع على شاطئ البحر الأحمر الذي يتوسط قارات العالم القديم آسيا وأفريقيا، كما أن جدة بوابة مكة وميناؤها وخزانتها، وملتقى الحجاج القاصدين بيت الله، وتاريخ جدة الاجتماعي والإداري والاقتصادي تحديدًا لم يحظَ بالدراسة، كما أن تاريخ جدة بصفة عامة لم يجد اهتمامًا لدى المؤرخين المسلمين القدامى، فكان ذِكر مدينة جدة جاء ضمن مصادر تاريخ مكة، ويرى بعض الباحثين أنه لولا مصادر تاريخ مكة وكتابات الرحالة المسلمين لفُقد جزء كبير من تاريخ مدينة جدة، ولأهمية تاريخ جدة في العصر الإسلامي حتى نهاية العصر العباسي. وسيعرض البحث أهم الجوانب الحضارية في تاريخ جدة، ففي الأوضاع الاجتماعية سيتطرق إلى دراسة عناصر السكان وأوضاعهم المعيشية والمظاهر العمرانية، والإدارية والأمنية وفي الأوضاع الاقتصادية سنتعرف على أهم الأنشطة الاقتصادية التي زاوَلها سكن جدة، ومن أهمها التجارة والصناعة وصيد السمك، واجتهدت الباحثة في استقصاء المعلومات الواردة في المصادر التاريخية، وما تحويه كتب الجغرافيا والرحَّالة للوصول إلى دراسة مُلِمَّة بالجوانب الحضارية في تاريخ مدينة جدة خلال العصر الإسلامي حتى نهاية العصر العباسي
