Abstract English

This study discusses the scholarly life in the city of Nizwa from the 3rd to the 6th centuries AH (9th–12th centuries AD). During this era, Nizwa emerged as one of the most prominent centers of learning in eastern Arabian Peninsula and the Islamic world. The people of Nizwa relied on educational institutions such as mosques, kuttabs (traditional elementary schools), Qurʾanic schools, and scholarly circles to gain and spread knowledge. Scholars of Nizwa contributed to the development of Sharia Sciences and linguistic sciences. In addition, the city’s geographical location, political stability and interacting with other scientific centers helped to support the growth of the scholarly activity.The study includes a brief idea of Nizwa’s political, economic, cultural, factors that influenced scholarly activity, educational institutions during the period from the 3rd to the 6th centuries AH (9th–12th centuries CE), the most important scholars and thinkers of the city and their contributions. I concluded that Nizwa constituted a comprehensive scholarly environment, producing a generation of distinguished scholars in spreading knowledge within Oman and beyond.

الملخص العربي

يتناول هذا البحث الحياة العلمية في مدينة نزوى خلال الفترة من )ق ٣- ٦ه/ ٩- ١٢ م(، حيث كانت في تلك الفترة من أبرز المراكز العلمية في شرق الجزيرة العربية والعالم الإسلامي، واعتمد أهلها في اكتساب المعرفة ونشرها على المؤسسات التعليمية من مساجد وكتاتيب ومجالس علمية، وأسهم علماؤها في تطوير العلوم الشرعية واللغوية، كما أسهم الموقع الجغرافي، والاستقرار السياسي، والتفاعل مع المراكز العلمية الأخرى في ازدهار الحركة العلمية بها. وقد حوى البحث: نبذة عن مدينة نزوى وأهميتها السياسية والاقتصادية والحضارية، والعوامل المؤثرة في الحركة العلمية بها، والمؤسسات العلمية خلال الفترة من )ق ٣- ٦ه/ ٩- ١٢ م(، وأعلام العلم والفكر بها وإسهاماتهم. وتوصّّل البحث إلى: أن مدينة نزوى كانت بيئة علمية متكاملة؛ أسهمت في إنتاج جيل من العلماء البارزين، الذين أدّّوا دورًًا كبيرًًا في نشر العلم داخل عمان وخارجها.
